My sister is pregnant and naming her daughter after my deceased twin?

I’ve always planned to name my future son after my twin brother. I’m happy my older sister is pregnant but now I feel weird. If I have a son, he and my niece will have the same name. I’ve never wanted the name as a middle name, only a first name. I feel sad kinda. I don’t plan on having kids anytime soon but I can’t help but feel bummed out that my sister claimed the name already.
My sister and I aren’t close that much since we didn’t grow up together but I will be living near her soon and plan to be involved with her once I move.

Nothing is stopping you from naming your future son after your brother. There are many families out there where people have the same name. If you feel like she “stole” it or you want sole use of his name then you could talk to your sister about it. Maybe there could be some sort of compromise, like her doing the middle name thing instead. However, I do think it’s worth giving this some deeper thought. Like when we name our kids or even our new pets after one that passed away, what is the purpose? Usually it’s to commemorate that loved one, keeping their name alive and it’s sentimental. So keeping these core values in mind, does it really matter which one of you got to honor your sibling first? Or does it matter that he is being honored just in general? I’m not sure how a conversation about this whole name thing would go, and it may hurt her that you’d want to “call dibs” on using your brothers name. So from here I’d ultimately say to do what feels right for you.

I'm sure your kid and her kid will very happily bond over the fact that they share the same name. Either that or you could just do a different spelling of it to differentiate between the kids. Either way, her naming her kid that is her choice just as much as it's your choice. Unless you have reason to believe she's doing it out of malice, there's no real reason to try and change her mind or change yours.
