I have a question about my roommate?

My roommate moved out but he is still primary on the lease should he still pay rent but I tried ans asked and he said I ain't paying shit because I'm not living there. What should I do?

Unfortunately these things do happen & unfortunately sometimes roommates leaving you hanging. As for your roommate if she or he are the primary lease holder it might be a good time for you to start packing your belongings if you are NOT on the lease agreement. On the other hand if you ARE ON the lease agreement it might be a good time to find a new paying roommate if you are unable to pay the rent in full. If you are able to pay the rent in full & you are on the lease agreement it might be a good time to have the locks changed so your former roommate doesn’t have access to the place you are renting & inform the owner. Me personally if I WASN’T ON the lease agreement I would pack up my belongings & move just to screw your former roommate & I wouldn’t tell the owner anything.

He didn't tell you beforehand? What a dick lol. In such situations they should tell you they are moving out so you can look or even them for someone else to replace them. Or giving you time to find a new place and etc. Either way this should of all be planned out months before.
Anyway as for now? Well Tenets are equally responsible to pay rent so if he's still on the lease then he still has to pay his rent until he cancels it, you can't just stop paying for it because you feel like it if you've signed an agreement.

You tell him to find a trusted replacement then who will live and pay on his behalf as that's a very selfish thing to do and it's still under his name. Usually people who get a property on rent together actually either give a notice together or if some wants to stay and few or one wants to move out, they make sure to get a good replacement so they won't have to pay anymore and others won't have to pay extra anymore. He/she can take money from the new person and give it to the tenant or you guys

People are supposed to give 30 days notice to allow the landlord time to find a new tenant. but it is not the tenant's responsibility to find their replacement. Personally though, if I had a roommate, it would be because I got along with them, so If I moved I'd want to bring them with me because good roommates are very hard to find.

@TheSpaceGnome You misunderstood me. I actually agree that if both of them want to leave all they have to do is give a notice however since he's tied to the contract for a year and he shared a house with her. It's her former roommates responsibility to find the replacement, not the owner's.

That's true. I've lived with housemates and I know what you mean. It's definitely rare to meet people you feel very close tounderstands and you can trust.

No, I understood what you meant, I was saying that legally speaking, he only has to notify the landlord 30 days prior, he does not legally have to find his former roommate a new roommate.

It would be considerate to help find one, but if he doesn't want to, there is nothing she can do about it.

@TheSpaceGnome Ah! Okay. I guess the rules are different in every country then. Where I live one can give one month notice and vacate and then it's owner's responsibility to find another tenant unless he/she hires an agent but when it comes to renting their house to number of people living as housemates, what the owners expect is either you all give one month notice and leave or "if some of you want to stay, whoever is leaving find a replacement because I want the whole rent anyhow"

If he has left and it was known ahead of time. No because if you force him to act he will cancel the lease and you will be homeless in a few months. Is saving some rent worth that consequence? So pay the full rent, maybe look for your own place so you don't have a deal with him anymore.

No I didn't know ahead of time at all. Yeah I have to pay 2000 a month by myself. I'm looking for a new place but right no km struggling to pay this until then.

If he does not live there, the lease is no longer applicable to him. Stop pestering him and either put an ad out for another roommate, or find a cheaper place.
