i also felt that like when a kid dies the emotion for the tragedy is stronger even for a stranger and this is due to the young age like they lost "even more years" than dying at age 20 or 30. but it is not that adult lives are less valuable just it is hard to relate to a stranger unless it is a painful tragedy like young. similarly in past "women and children first" the men can't get on the life boat. reference a scene in the end of film titanic the guy carried a kid to get on the life boat.
Adults are assholes, you just proved that.
