How often can a child look nothing like the parents but it's still their bio child?

It happened to my a family friend. They're married and had their first baby a couple years ago. The baby girl looks nothing like them.

They both decided to get tested to see if there is a chance they were handed the wrong baby. It was positive for both tests, they are the bio parents. How often does that happen? The baby looks nothing like the parents but they are indeed the bio parents.

I think I look like my parents but a lot of people say I don't. Genetics are a crazy thing. Both my parents come from a family with a diverse genetic make-up.

Their daughter is now 4 years old she ended up getting two recessive genes, red hair and green eyes. The parents don't know any redheads nor green-eyed person in the family. Yet when they both got tested, the exams indicated they both carried those recessive genes.

Yup! For sure. I am tall and have green eyes unlike both my parents :)

It's called recessive genes.

Ask your bio or science teacher to go over that in class. It's a neat little thing about humans and our genetics.

True. When they got tested, it showed both parents carried the recessive gene for both red hair and green eyes. They just don't know anyone (living member) in their family that were redheads nor had green eyes. So I'm guessing it's some ancient ancestor they never knew. In that case, it didn't expressed itself for many generations.

It don't happen often, did your friend mother had plastic surgeries? the child is a mutant?

No she didn't. No mutant at all. She's just a redhead with green eyes, two recessive genes. The parents have no clue where she got it from.

Probably not very often, but I bet it does happen.

They found out the answer to why their baby was different from them. It turns out they both carried a couple recessive genes from past ancestors. So their baby girl likely resemble a great-grandparent or even a bit far too. Wow... shocking how genes can still be traced back.
