What other explanation can there be if a child (already tested and positive) looks nothing like you?

My friend broke up with his girlfriend a couple years ago. However, they have a 4 year-old son. Though the son looks absolutely nothing like him at all, not even the skin tone. They're like water and oil. He looks nothing like the mother either.

He has already done the paternity on two different clinics and both results are 99.99 positive. Ok so it is his child after all. Yeah he does spends quality time with his kid. What other explanation can there be?

That could be it. Perhaps there is some genetic mutation somewhere or a disorder, even though the boy seems healthy, just physically different from his parents. My friend is actually curious about doing an ancestry exam so he can see if he can trace back an ancestor he might resemble more.

Recessive genes? Unless both parents look exactly like their own both parents, and on and on, it's not too uncommon for the child to not look much like either one. It may just look like another relative, an uncle or aunt, grandparent, or cousin.

I don't look like my parents much at all, but I do have traits in common with my maternal grandmother and paternal uncle. Also if the child literally came out of the mother and looks nothing like her, then I don't see why it looking nothing like the dad is any reason to believe he isn't really the dad either.

It's the fact that the baby comes out directly from the mother's belly so the child will always be hers regardless of how different he looks. So she'll basically always know she conceived her baby since it's internal. For the father it's another story. He contributed his DNA but there is no way to tell he's the father unless tested, which he did.
My friend is going to trace back the ancestry line to see if they can find someone the boy looks like because it's sure not them nor their parents either. I think it might go far back.

Yes, that's what I mean. The fact that the baby doesn't look like her yet must be hers, is evidence that the baby can also be the fathers despite not looking like him. It's clearly possible, since it is true for the mother.
(Also it could potentially be some sort of disorder, which can sometimes effect the appearance of a child's face and body, but these are usually genetic as well i think, like down syndrome.)

I knew a kid like that. He had thick, black hair and was about 5 shades darker than both of his pasty white parents, one was blonde and the other was supposedly brunette but his hair was so gray and thin you couldn’t really tell. He was 100% their kid though. Turned out he looked almost exactly like his great-great grandfather on his mother’s side. Some genes are just weird like that man.

It's likely either recessive or throwback genes that have been dormant for generations. Some genes can actually skip several generations.

Would allergies also be included? I have allergies to paprika, black pepper (or any seasoning; makes me cough too much), cats, spicy things, some facial creams, some make-up products or sudden seasonal changes. Neither my parents, nor brother nor anyone alive in my family have those allergies. Yet my OB said that someone within my ancestor had it.
