Conservative Christians: how would you want to find out a close friend is trans?

I'm going back and forth between various different methods I've heard of (texting, in person, how and how much to bring up etc)...

I like this person. I care about her. We were roommates in college, we have many common interests, and miraculously we're still both in the same city indefinitely. I want this friendship to continue. But I know it... almost definitely... won't. I just don't want to tip the odds any more out of favor than they already are.

If it were you... how would you want to find out? Would you want a text—casual, or formal? Or in person—at one of your homes, or a neutral 3rd location? Over a meal? Between some activity? In one of our cars on the way back home?

I know this is all pointless and that it'll all go to pot no matter how much I try to meet them where they are and answer their questions and not impose anything on them. That's how it's gone with every family member. Every church friend. Every Christian teacher. ... I just hope that, just one person, I won't have to let go. And she's pretty much the only one left now.
