How to leave a friendship on good terms?

There is a person who I have had a friendship with, he has been a good friend, but he is a lot older than me. I'm a single young girl, and just don't think it's right to be so intimate in a friendship. He hasn't done anything inappropriate, but wants to talk every night and now he wants to start calling me. It would be fine if we stayed casual friends on Facebook (that's where we met), but that's all.

What would be a polite way to say this to him? I want to leave on good terms.

Send him the paragraph you just wrote. You leave people on good terms by being courteous. Ghosting people is not courteous. Semi ghosting people is not courteous.
You leave people on good terms by using attractive traits in the process of letting them know you want to move on. That's the least hurtful way even if they don't like your decision. People respect honesty, kindness, courteous, directness, etc if they are thinking clearly and wise.
The question is who do you want to be in this world? The best version of you or something else?

I sent him a very polite text yesterday, he said he was not upset, and that he understood and respected my decision.
I'm glad it turned out good. We're still friends on Facebook.

Just minimize your interactions with him, don’t respond every night or whatever, create distance with your actions. He will get it eventually.
