This is a very generalized answer but if we take Nietzche's saying:

I think that's only sometimes true. Many people grow weaker over traumas, not stronger. Maybe only a few become stronger.

The difference as I see it is in interpretation. You can interpret a traumatic event in an fearful way like, "That was the worst thing ever and therefore I never want to go through it again." Then you've grown weaker because now you're afraid of ever going through it again. Here it's like you've fallen off the horse so you never want to try horse riding ever again and never want to get anywhere close to horses.

Or you can interpret it the other way like, "I survived that and I'm still alive. So I know I can handle that if I ever have to deal with this again," and then you've grown stronger because now you're less afraid than ever before. Here it's like you fell off the horse and realized you're still alive and in one piece so you get back on the horse again.

So I think that's the difference. If you want to regain your confidence, you might need to start trying to look at things this second way and not the first way.
