Is it weird that he told his friend about our similarities?

A male acquaintance and family friend of mine was having a discussion with me and he pointed out how I could really relate to him as a whole and I understand him. He also informed me that he told his closest friend that we were similar. Do you think he trying to build a connection with me? Or is it weird that he told his closest friend?

I overheard the friend that he told this to has talking bad about me behind my back

I forgot to add more context. His friend is a jerk who I have caught talking shit about me and he knows it
