Is a normal, young person with manners really rare as I'm told?

Just last week, some elderly woman was taken by surprise upon seeing me opening the market door and helping her with the bags. She told me what I just did is rare nowadays.

It seems like just basic to me. Is it really rare?

There is really nothing special. It's just basic manners. Same as saying thank you. Yet a couple older person act surprised when they see that coming from me, an average 16 year-old in HS.

I think it depends on where you live. In some places, it would be a shock to have anyone hold the door.

I think kids are pretty polite, but a lot are lazy and most teens (in every generation) are self absorbed. I see neighborhood kids get off their school bus and walk right past their own empty garbage cans and even step over the trash that spilled, rather than haul them up their own driveway. Those same kids say please and thank you when I talk to them.

The other day, I was walking out of a coffee shop behind 3 teenage boys. I wondered if they would hold the door for me. I expected them to drop the door because they didn't even glance at me. To my pleasant surprise, the last one held the door. I was proud of him ❤

Unfortunately it has become rare in society. My younger brother and sister and myself were always taught to hold a door for elderly or whoever. I've held the door for a mom that had a toddler in a stroller. I think it's just basic manners.
