How do you make an elderly parent a ward of the state?

My 53 year old mother had several strokes, almost died of ketoacidosis, gave all of her money to scams and got dumped on my doorstep over 1,000 miles away from where her insurance is valid.

She is so physically and mentally gone I cannot handle caring for her and she is vastly incapable of caring for herself.

I only have enough insulin to keep her alive for 18 days.

She lies to me about taking the meds she needs to stay alive, she does not respect our house rules and like a child will not listen to me when I tell her she can’t have/do something that’s dangerous to her health.

My boyfriend is unemployed due to a work related injury and I’ve had to stop working to care for my mother.

So, if my inability to care for her doesn’t kill her the homelessness will.

I need help.

There is a process but it varies radically from state to state. You’ll need to start by calling whatever entity provides social services in your area. If they aren’t the right agency then they will know who is. She doesn’t qualify as elderly at 53 so you are looking less for a ward of the state (typically a juvenile) and more of a dependent situation. You may be surprised to find out there isn’t a giant safety net that just absorbs all the people who cannot take care of themselves in the country.

You should call your local welfare office. They will pay for her medical care and possibly give you money to pay for her room and board. You can even get paid to care for her through " freedom care ". It's always advertised on the TV and radio.

If it's too much for you to take care of her you can put her in a nursing home. Welfare would cover everything
