I think the key is to be consistent... and never make a threat you will not follow through on. Then when you do decide to take action your kids will know you are not bluffing. When they are young a time out can be a powerful thing... increase the time out based on their age. Removal of privileges is also effective. The punishment must also fit the crime. Something serious requires a serious punishment. Its mostly common sense... and once you know your child's Achilles heel you can really hold them to account. For example if your teen loves their phone that is a privilege they will want to maintain... use that knowlege to your advantage. But you must also explain why there is punishment sometimes... random punishment without explanation will not be effective in teaching a child self control.

I give her that proverbial "look" and she knows I'm not playing around. Usually, but not always, pacifies the situation.

I bet thats because she knows you never bluff and are serious... I found the same thing. Most of the time a slight change in tone or a look was enough to bring my kids in line. Punishment rarely ever happened.

Yes! Tone is big. I don't even need violence. Never used violence. I tell her why, one time. I think kids play like they don't hear you, but are just adventuring.

I wasn't spanked at all as a kid other than on one occasion where my dad lost it and that was more of a beating than a spanking.

Even though I was raised without it and would love to be my kids friends as much as their parents, I also believe firm discipline is sometimes necessary. They can't be kicking and screaming and being obnoxious in public places. I've seen kids like that and wondered why the parents just look at them and do nothing while everyone is thinking "Control your kid!" If they do act out like that then I'd give them a firm spank. Not to scar them or "traumatize" them like people say nowadays, but just to show them they can't act out like that. I was always a quiet and calm kid when I was younger and that's why nothing ever happened to me.

Or even those obnoxious screaming kids on planes. I would control my kid. I'd rather have them quiet down than to disturb everyone on the plane. It's ridiculous that people just let that kind of behaviour go nowadays.

I've never hit her. My husband won't hit a kid. We do time out in her room and have no friends until she admits how she acted up. She's adorable. She'll come back and makeup. We are trying to also not get her into the habit of doing wrong and also doing wrong and get the feeling of a makeup. Kids are tricky!

Every kid is different. From how you describe yours, I don't think they'd need the firm discipline. But there are some obnoxious little demons running amok and they need to be controlled in my opinion. All these entitled kids that feel they can get away with anything is due to poor parenting.

Agreed! My mother use to spank me. My dad just grabbed me and hugged me and said, "Stop, I love you." And he wouldn't let me down until i was going to behave. I have friends they just let their kids do whatever! Either the parents discipline or life will eventually.

I already guide them... I give them knowledge, information, I inspire their own critical thinking, make them use it

and I am there to guide them, not to "discipline" them, I am there to listen, to discuss and to explain lessons learned too

lead them with the example as well, a genuine one... as I always tell them, everyone, including me... can be an example for both what to do, and what not to do... and it is not about just for them to do as you say, but to see and understand the consequences of our own actions

Well I wouldn't hit them! I mean, maybe when they are toddlers, a light tap on the hand with a stern “no” because they lack the language or reasoning skills to “talk to them”. I believe in positive reinforcement, vs. negative enforcement. Children need discipline and structure. Structure makes children feel safe, without it they become loud rambunctious undisciplined little shits! That’s how my parents raised us, if we did good, and behaved well, we got all kinds of treats. If we screwed around, were too noisy (after we’d been told to be quiet), or got bad grades, then we did not get treats. Not that we always got treats, but if we were going somewhere and mom or dad said “be on your best behavior” we knew what that meant… If we were good we’d get a treat, if we were not, we would not! It was that simple, and it really worked. I think I’ll try that method!

    I hope this is helpful

I wouldn't... they are human beings, intelligent and able to learn...

raising kids is not about discipline, it's about consistency, understanding, unconditional love, and support... it's about seeing the world through their eyes, learning their perspective and helping them to notice that there are more perspectives...

Focus on consistency, communication, and positive reinforcement. You can't expect a little kid to understand or remember just because you said something once. I do not believe in corporal punishment of any kind. My own parents, my father in particular, were more in favor of the idea of "discipline" and "respect" and I just remember being confused and frustrated as a kid. It really didn't work for me, so I doubt it would work for my children (were I to have them lol).

I will tell them no and tell them why it is bad if they continue doing it they will be slapped. Simples.. I will not be doing what my sister did. My sister and her husband never hit her kid (tried the talking method with time outs) now that he is a teenager he cocks off and swears at both my sister and his dad, he literally has no fear, then people wonder why kids have no respect in this generation lol. They need proper discipline.

I never hit my kids. I wanted to teach them non violence. I would take away some privilege or not let them to go to an event that they were looking forward to. It was a very tricky thing and sometimes it resulted in an unexpected outcome.

It all depends on the situation but I don't agree with hitting them at all. But it would be things like time out more chores grounded no mobile or anything like that it would depend on what they did though I think these days kids play up for attention because they don't get any at all in my opinion..

Peacefully & calmly when applicable, then explain what they did was wrong and why it was wrong.

Compassion and understanding comes before anger and yelling. That should be the way.

Time out in their bedroom, no way would I spank them because my late mom would beat me with anything she could get her hands on, it was horrible for me.
