Are/Were you close with any of your grandparents?

All of my grandparents (besides great-grandparents) had already been split up for a long time by the time we grandkids came into the picture, but I always had one present grandparent from each side. I've already mentioned that my maternal grandmother died when I was 2, so I have no memories of her. My grandma from my dad's side had me from day one. She basically wanted me when my own parents didn't and it shows in our bond. The whole family knows I'm still her baby and I have no shame about that. Imagine Spongebob with his grandma -- I'm basically Spongebob. 😂

And my mom's dad was always around, but it wasn't until he moved in with us that I really got to bond with him and I'm just really glad that we had those few years together before he passed. ❤

I don't remember my paternal grandmother, Irene. She was sick. I don't know if it was cancer. But when we went to my paternal grandparent's house, I don't remember being taken into her room to see her. And when my parents visited her in the hospital, they didn't take me in the room. I don't know what that was all about.
I was 5 years old when she died at the age of 59.

My paternal grandfather was a character. My mom didn't like him. But he seemed fun and he had had an interesting life.
One time when we were at his house, he asked my dad if he wanted to go see a ball game. The three of us went to see the Dodgers at the new Dodger Stadium. It must have been in 1962. I was 8. It was my first baseball game. I still remember the thrill.

By the time I was in my mid-teens, he had a girlfriend named Dorothy who was quite a bit younger than him. I was old enough to get to know him better. He was kind of cocky, mischievous and chipper. He was pretty hip and up with the times.
He died when I was 22. When I got older, I realized that probably would have liked him a lot and that we would have gotten along really well.

I was close to my maternal grandparents all my life. Most of my childhood memories include them. We would go to their house once a week to spend Saturday or Sunday. The six of us (them, my parents, me and my and sister) did a lot of things together.

Some of the places we went, such as the Huntington Library, the Los Angeles Arboretum, Descanso Gardens, a hummingbird sanctuary, O'Niell Park, the San Garbriel, and San Bernardino Mountains, inspired a deep, lifelong passion in me for nature, as did the beautiful garden at their house.

My grandmother was the sweetest lady in the world. She was always supportive and made me feel good about myself.

I cherish the memories of holidays we spent together along with aunts, uncles and cousins. Good ol' American feasts, midwestern food. Both of my parents were raised in the midwest (Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin) during the great depression. My parents were in their early 20s when WWII broke out.

My grandfather was as tough as nails and kind of serious. But he was a music lover. He had hi-fi stereo and a large record collection. When he heard a new song on the radio, he would buy the record. He introduced me to cool stuff like The Beach Boys, The Ventures, Jan and Dean, The Mama and the Papas, and lots of current music. But I heard all kinds of musical genres at his house that gave me a rounded knowledge of, and appreciation for, music. I still remember a lot of songs that are from before my time.

He died in 1976, the same year as my paternal grandfather. My grandmother died two years later when I was 24.

I still miss them. I wish I had known them when I was older and able to relate.

It varied with all of my grandparents. Both sides of my family really were complete opposites. My moms side were very by the book people and my dads side were all just degenerates in every way conceivable i. e. addicts, criminals, prostitutes u name it 🤣

My mom’s mom passed away when I was 5 I only have vague memories of her she was very loving though. My mom’s dad was funny at times but he was mostly stern and difficult to be around. I have good memories of him but I wouldn’t have called us close. He died the summer I graduated high school.

My dad’s parents were the more fun ones when we were little kids but they were both addicts. My grandpa wasn’t as bad and usually hid it well/was functional til he passed away but my grandma turned into a full blown junkie and was just a misery to be around as i got into my teen years. I was closest to my grandpa he was always fun even if he was a bad influence. They ironically both lived til their late 80’s and died within a few weeks of each other.

with my mom's parents wasn't that close since for most of my life they lived in another continent. i'd see the sometimes on summer break and every so often exchange letters or call them. they both respectively died when i was 13 and 16, so didn't get too much time with them.

was much closer with my dad's parents since they were a lot closer geographically. i'd often spend the whole summer break with them and stuff. though didn't get too much with my grandma either, when i was 14 she developped alzheimers and was basically a braindead vegetable by the time i was 16, she died like a year later. my grandad is still alive but i haven't been close to him since i was 15 cos i went through a hardcore rebellious teen phase and since then we have a tense relationship. but honestly its hard to get along with him he's a very rigid old school vet with extreme anger issues

I only had one left when I was born. She wasn't very nice.
Was told my parents on my mother's side were great. Grandmother had a wicked sense of humor and too my grandfather who was also who I downloaded my motorcycle genes from. Well and his father raced cars. I would have been very close with them. They both passed before my mother was 18.

I used to be. But my dad fucked it up and now I can't stand being around her because she used to know what she did and didn't know about me and now she treats me like a totally different person. I think he's jealous we had a better relationship.

I had a bad relationship with my mom and I relied on my grandma to have that give and take with. It was the second most valuable thing in my life next to my relationship with my brother.

She can't imagine her son lying and as much as I can't stand living in his lie, I can't be the one to take her second son away from her heart. I'd rather she be disgusted by me so she can have peace with whatever time she has left.

Lately I wonder if my decision is panning out how I hoped. I might have made things worse by letting it happen.

So fucked up. Family never makes anything easy. At least in mine, its where the boundaries between right and wrong feel like they just dissappear.

My paternal grandmother died when I was a few years old, and grandpa was rather set to himself. My maternal grandparents were a much bigger part of my life. Grandpa taught me a lot about woodworking, electricity, soldering, he built "my" Lionel train running the whole length of my parent's basement, etc. He was the pre-original MacGyver. Made several inventions, but never had them patented: did have one of them stolen by Lionel. Maternal grandma did the praying so grandpa wouldn't burn down the house. ;- )

Yes, with my paternal grandfather.

I have a feeling that my maternal grandfather and I would have gotten along great too, based on what I've been told about him. We left Chicago when I was very young though and he'd had one or two strokes not long before, so he was very mentally impaired for most of the time that I would have known him. So I never really got to know him well at all.

I was the closest with my grandmother on my mothers side. But she lived in a city 1 hour away from where we lived so we didn't see each other as regularly as if she lived close by. But she was very sweet and caring. My other grandparents live in Canda so I'm even less connected to them. In general my family is quite spread out so I didn't get a lot of support and connection outside of my mom

I was very close to my grandparents. I never got to know my mom's dad because he passed before I was born. I was close to her mom though. And I was very close to my dad's parents. I also got the chance to meet my dad's grandma and I was also close to her. She lived to be very old, so I actually got to spend several years with my great grandma which was awesome. She could certainly tell some stories of the old days! I miss them all very much.

I visited my dad's father and his wife (my dad's mom died before I was born) fairly often because they lived nearby. Maybe 30 minutes away.
I didn't visit my mom's parents (divorced) as often because they lived a full day's drive north, but I did once every few years.

Yes, but since they lived in Detroit and we had no car, I didn't see them as often as I'd have wished, but sometimes spoke to them on the phone.
