If working dogs aren't meant to be family pets, how are some people able to raise kids with those dogs?

I know a couple people (my own female cousin too) that already either in a relationship or married with children. They have a strong, powerful dog breed that gets along with their kids and others. The dog is both a working and family pet. How is that possible?

My female cousin has a large, female Cane Corso. Then again, they live in a large farm. The dog is very active, works for long hours but she's also a family pet. She knows me well by now and is very friendly. Others have the same opinion, that she's a gentle giant.

I've seen someone else that have two German Shepherd as family pets too. Someone else did a good job with a Rottweiler and another with an American Bully. How is that possible, to get a working dog that can also be a family pet.. and successfully raise kids with those breeds without any problems?
