My parents were defrauded by a roofer but now they'd won't report it to police?

they had contacted this roofer to have a roof installed on a second home they rent out. they paid him a deposit in the spring and he was suppose to do it around May. but never came or ordered the materials.

from what i read there is a scam/trick roofers desperate for money use on people. they claim to need a bigger deposit than normal cause they need the money to buy the materials. then they disappear once they get the money and never show up to do the job

this seems to be what happened to them , i already talked to a police officer here and he said it was for sure a scam but they would need to be the ones to report it to police

now weeks later and left wondering why someone who had obviously been defrauded would not want to report the fraud to police? its obvious the roofer is never going to give the money back , they already asked him to mutually cancel the contract but he refused

well yes the situation has still not been resolved which is why i'm so annoyed , would you not be upset if someone stole money from your family?

i tried to get them an appointment with a lawyer i saw online but message i got back said they needed more info and it would cost $300-$500 just for a 1 hour consultation meeting. so total bill was going to be way too big

Then you go to the police and make the report. That would be a hell more productive than telling us here for the fifth time.

the police already told me they need to file the report since i was not the person defrauded

apparently this guy is now clearing snow off roofs as its winter and there have been some complaints about him on facebook , a lady is claiming he blocked her in with snow after she didn't pay or she complained about the way he did the job.

this is the kind of person there dealing with he was willing to block a senior lady in her own home with snow cause of a minor dispute

feel like they just aren't familiar with the legal system and how it works. they legally had a right to cancel the contract after 30 days as he did not show up to do the job but instead waited and listened to his excuses
