How do you feel about maintaining long-distance friendships? What makes them work or not work?

I moved away from my hometown almost 9 years ago. I drifted away from a lot of people but I still keep in contact with a few and I try to visit them when I go visit my family. I also have some online friends that I have been talking to for years who live in other countries. Communication is key. If you don’t want to keep in contact then fine, that’s the end of the friendship.

I moved to the UK a few years ago. I still keep in touch with everyone back home, we have a group chat and video call often. I go back sometimes and make sure I hang out with everyone and some of them have come here to visit. Half of them we wouldn't see each other for months at a time even when in the same country so it's really not all that difficult. So long as the friendship is strong ( we've all pretty much been friends since middle school) then it's very easy.

I have a long distance friendship with a guy I met here on GaG and we got very close with each other. I basically talk with him all the time for the past year and a half, i find it a unique and an amazing friendship as I never had such one before.

It's working very well because we understand each other's and we match each other's energy. Also because I'm a talkative girl and I don't skip any detail, surprisingly he's the same as me. Means no matter how much we talk, we never ran out of subjects and it's always endless convo full of fun things.

I plan to meet him during this year as he became one of my best friends of all times despite the big age difference.

I live in the Pacific Northwest and one of my best friends of almost 10 years has been living in Virginia for that past 3 years. It’s been hard, but that makes the time we do spend together all the more worth it.
