Myself, kids if I had any, and work backwards. I did do some family tree research at one point. It was easier than expected although after five hundred years or so there were too many questionmarks - in my case.
Awkwardly found out I was very distantly related to a cute girl in my uni group. While that was fun in a way, it was awkward in others.
Of course with me being european there is the added bonus that if you go far enough back you often run into nobility and royalty. Everyone is a blueblood at some point. You'd think we had copper not iron in our veins. That is how blood colour works right? I admit my highschool biology is some years behind me now.
Start with me and work backwards like in the image.
It's harder to do and gets more confusing over time, though, with the maternal links because they change their surnames when they get married. Not all families keep good records.
Hard to do unless you have older living relatives to tell you but work your way back and get as much info from older relatives as you can. I'm sure a lot of this is recorded in government stats, who lived where and who they married.
Maybe find out where they lived and visit cemetery or death records.
