If you knew them, what's something that reminds you of your grandparents?

Any time I see Comet (bathroom cleaning product), I think of my grandmother. That's what she would use to clean her bathroom. I never saw anyone else clean with that.

The smell of sawdust, pine specifically. My grandpa was a quiet man who was bad at opening up and showing how he felt with words, so he did things for people instead. He would make clocks by hand for the family, and I remember as a kid he helped me make a wooden train set to play with while I was visiting there. He had an old workshop near the living room and any time you walked in there you were blasted with the smell of pine sawdust.

As for my grandma she was a racist, homophobic, nasty, hypocritical, self-righteous and sinful, bitter woman that my grandpa had regrets about marrying. Unfortunately, he was a fundamentalist Christian, and he believed in his wedding vows even though he was unhappy. It was the whole "We made a vow in front of god." type thing, he felt ethically bound to her.

That said he was a kind man with a big heart to give you an idea of the difference in his and my grandma's dynamic if I or one of my cousins had turned out gay instead of straight my grandpa would have still loved us but my grandma 100% would have disowned us and cut us from the will. My grandpa was the kind of man where even if he thought being gay was a sin it still wouldn't make the love he felt for his family turn off. His love wasn't a light switch my grandmas was, by the end I loathed her and didn't even go to the funeral and neither did my dad.

We were very close to my maternal grandparents.

They owned a cute duplex on a corner and rented out the other unit.
Their front and back yards were beautiful with lovely plants and flowers. When I was a kid, I had no idea how much work and care they must have put into it.

We would often go places with them on a Saturday or Sunday. And some of their favorites were places like the Los Angeles Arboretum, Descanso Gardens, the Huntington Library Art Museum and Botanical Garden, various parks, lakes and nature preserves.

So, whenever I go to places like that, I think of my grandparents. They instilled in me a love of nature.

My grandfather was also a music lover and had a large record collection. He introduced me to a lot of music. So, when I hear certain songs, I think of him.

On the maternal side, the smell of cold baked beans remind me of my grandfather. He liked them that way, and I remember how this smelt in his kitchen.
Cadbury chocolate reminds me of him too, as when we went to visit, he would always buy us a bar. I often walked to the end of his road waiting for him to get back from work, and would search for a glimpse of shiny purple of the wrapper in his hand, but I never saw it. He always had it well hidden so he could pretend he didn’t have any so he could ‘surprise’ us.

I only got to really know my grandmother on my father's side because she lived with me until she died. The smell of birch wood and black coffee reminds me of her from time to time. I miss her sometimes.

my dark green blanket i still use since i was a little kid my late maternal grandma who deceased last year gave me.

i lost people before but she took something different from me, it is not like any pain i recieved before, it is not hurtfull or suffocating, it feels like my face is melting and instead of sobbing i feel like whining when i think about her, no literally, whinning of a dog not a metaphor.

maybe that's a german granny thing but they would always have a roll of toilet paper with a knitted sort of cover back on the rear shelf or cargo cover in the car.

like I don't know why everyone had this back then but when i see this, it reminds me of them.
