Why can't I stop shoplifting?

Though I only do it once in a while and it's usually small items such as lipsticks, candies or cheap accessories.

When I was a kid and during my early teen years, I was only caught twice by my parents. Obviously that resulted in the old-school punishment.

It only reduced the frequency of it but I became sneakier and still continue doing it over the years (just not as often as when I was younger and always making sure I wasn't caught...) and the last time I did it 2 days ago. My parents still think they fixed that long ago. They don't know I'm still doing it at age 27.

Honestly how do I stop this shoplifting urge? It has caused me to even come late to a date, all because I just wanted something new. Why can't I just stop doing it?

Well at that time, I faked an apology and made my parents believed I've learned and will never do it again. I only said that to stop getting punished and go back to doing it when I was sure I wasn't caught.
