Why aren’t shoplifters stopped in the US?

There is this lady who was accused of stealing more than $40,000 worth of merchandise from Target. This amount is accumulated after she stole for like 128 times. I fail to see how can she get away with it considering she went to the same store.

Mom suspected she had breast cancer and was just about to go have it checked out in a few days when she had a stroke that cost her the use of her right arm for a while. While in the hospital dealing with that, her Dr,. said she DID have breast cancer in her left side and that he could get rid of it right then but, she'd lose the use of her left arm for a while so, she opted not to deal with it for a while and told him not to tell any of us about it.
3 years later, Christmas night, she discovered she couldn't walk anymore. We took her to the hospital the next day and found that cancer had eaten thousands of pinholes into the bone in her left leg! Had she left it alone much longer, the bones would've shattered. I got a look at her back while she was in the hospital. She had quite a few huge purple and green welts all over her back and chest!! That was cancer!! So, I went next door to the super market and bought her 100% pure maple syrup and baking soda. (Use Bob's Red Mill, it doesn't have aluminum in it) I took them home and immediately started making the cure for her. The next day, I started giving it to her while she was healing up from the surgery in the hospital. They put a rod in her leg. I gave her a teaspoon of it twice a day. Long ago I worked as uniformed security for a major store chain located in several states that carries food, clothing, electrical goods, etc. My job was to be all over the place and highly visible. I would sometimes disappear into the storage areas and come out in a different department. I was not supposed to apprehend shoplifters. But that does not mean they let them get away with it. That company had many people trained to apprehend shoplifters. Those people were supposed to be unknown to the staff of the store, but I figured out who they were. When I saw them come into the store I would get away from them so as to not interfere with them, but I would keep my eye out to help if needed. There were times I followed them out of the store and assisted them when they apprehended someone, since often the shoplifter would try to punch them out. If the culprit pulled away and took off, I would go after them and drag them back, and the security person would take them to an office and call the police to come get them. Since they were already in custody and the store chain was know to fully prosecute, the police would have no problem stopping by to take them in.

So shoplifters ARE stopped in the US/

The stores themselves do not really suffer that big of a loss for it, it mostly goes on insurance and all that and their staff is not qualified to be guards or police officers which means they are ill suited to try apprehend suspects by themselves. In other words you need to contact the police and let them do it independently.

Once a store becomes big enough then shoplifting just becomes the cost of doing business. It is simply not worth the effort to do anything particular about it.

This post is so incredibly wrong and tone deaf it's insane. Nearly every store and restaurant in downtown San Francisco has closed, as have they in Portland and Seattle. The Macy's that's been in Union Square in San Francisco for 87 years finally closed last week, and that was really the last holdout. The Walgreens and CVSs are gone, the fast food and most Starbucks are gone, all of Union Square and the Embarcadero area stores are gone, and lots more.

Why? Because they were dealing with multiple shoplifters EVERY HOUR they were open. And California changed the laws so that thefts with a value below $950 were misdemeanors that were considered "low priority" (i. e., the police won't come, and the DA won't prosecute).

This isn't just one person stealing a lipstick or a soda, this is gangs of people clearing shelves and racks of merch and running out the door.

There are also a change in behaviors, especially after Covid19 where people go out less to eat and shop and prefers to do that more online. Just look at the rise of Amazon for example, that fat chunk of 574.8 billion yearly revenue was ripped straight out of the local brick and mortar stores.

It is a new technology which was not tested properly before implementation so it simply did not work as well as they thought it would. Give it time and it will return after they figure out what works and what does not.

It's not bullshit at all. Most of these big retailers were on long-term leases, so they weren't having unplanned price increases in their rent. It was 100% crime. This is why you only see this crap happening in places where crime is high - places that "defunded the police." You absolutely don't see this in places where this kind of crime is taken seriously, and criminals are prosecuted.

You can't pretend this isn't happening, but there are PLENTY of leftists who used to think like you do, and supported the policies that led to all this, but saw this happening right in front of their eyes, and have seen all the stores close and leave. A lot of them had to leave themselves.

@MrOracle Long-term leases my ass. That argument does not save you if the situation changes, like what happened after the pandemic. A high rent could, and often is still profitable if you get enough sales but if the sales dries up then you can't maintain the location anymore.

If you truly want you can go test this yourself. Those locations are probably going to remain empty because the building owners rather keep them empty rather than lower their rents. In fact, its likely that the one who owns the building took out massive loans to buy it with the expectation of repaying the loans using a high rent so they can't go any lower if they wanted to without going bankrupt.

This same phenomena is happening in several major cities in USA and is basically just a rental economic bubble that is going to burst.

In other words, if you go to these building owners and pretend you want to rent their location which might have sat empty for like 5 years and you ask if you could get it a bit cheaper, they will probably laugh you out of the room and claim they will have some big brand move in there next month because its such a desirable property.

But yeah. You think this is happening because of crime.. which is retarded. Crime does not have that kind of effect on businesses. Economic factors does.

Some shoppes in Canada make you pay for the items you’ve stolen (like the overall costs) and you get to keep the items. If you cannot pay, the police are called. Usually you’ll just be slapped with a fine and worse case 30 in jail.

I've heard (im not sure if this is true) but I've heard that places like target actually let you steal up to a certain point, like $100 or somewhere up there, so you could keep stealing, and as long as you didn't go over that limit, they wouldn't care, because they couldnt get you in trouble for it.

Some companies consider it a greater risk to have their employees try to stop the shoplifter than just letting the shoplifter go. That's not to say they doi nothing about shoplifting. Often, there will be police in the parking lot to stop a shoplifter, and companies take steps to make it harder to shoplift, such as putting east-to-steal items behind a locked case.
