I'm single, but I would like a family with a son and daughter.

My preference would be the son to arrive first, and then he can look after his sister, whilst they are growing up.

Steps : 1) Find a suitable, loving partner who shares the same interests as you. Especially on the subject of kids. 2) When you're both ready for kids, don't delay the decision. Women have a so-called biological clock and they are very aware of it. 3) You don't get to choose the order of kids, not their sex, nor the fact that they will be of similar ages, one or two years apart. 4) Actually 'working' on having a child is the fun and sexy part. Be ready for a complete change in your life once you have a little baby in your arms.

As per your update on the question, I'd say the ideal is one year's difference between children, at most two. Differences like 5 to 8 years put your children in age groups that are very different.

I do not have children. In my family of origin, my sister was oldest, then a brother, then me, then the final brother.

My sister was a hateful, mean-spirited witch who loved trying to destroy other people. I did not speak to her the last five years of her life. She died earlier this year. I don't think those problems were related to gender or birth order.

At 2am I'd now be falling asleep and falling off my stool, and in no condition to propose marriage.
I've done all that every weekend a few years ago.
I went with 3 friends and at the end of the night we just ended up going for a take away (meal) and going home.

I totally agree with you, and in some cases if children come along that's wonderful. Also how many may not be given our choice, but usually children are planned, and what would your ideal scenario be?
