What causes people to stay with obviously shit friends?

A guy I work with has all his friends tell him to stay with his fiancé because she’s the best he could do.

The fiancé in question spends 70% of all his damn income, and he stays with her and the friends who say “she is the best you’ll do my guy.”

I have little respect for him tbh. Why do people stay with friends like this?

I was hanging out with a guy who I have WANTED to hang out with for the past 15 years. I held back bc I was sensitive about being around guys while my soon-to-be-ex was snooping to see if he could claim I was leaving him due to infidelity (which was my claim on him... he was apparently still dating for the full 10 years we were married). ANYWAY, in 2025 this guy declared, "You're SO INTERESTING. Why didn't we ever hang out before?" I shrugged and told him I had wanted to, but he was always surrounded by women and also seemed like a womanizer... I also pointed out that I wasn't hanging out with remotely good looking guys my ex might (falsely) try to identify as a potential boyfriend/partner. I said I didn't need the drama (which was true).

We hung out from April through late November this past year. We'd meet perhaps 4 times a week to the point folks asked if we were dating and I said no, esp since he was always flirting with the waitress, the hostess, the bartender and anyone else in his purview. He'd also spend a lot of time showing me pics of gals he CLAIMED were into him... Till I felt like the fat girl in gym class who no one wanted to pick for the relay race games... (And that's not me at all. I'm sturdy athletic gal, but he's into emaciated women who look like his sister... NO COMMENT.)

Anyway, he gave me an out, texting me a list of things that bugged him about me... mainly that he doesn't want me commenting on HIM but he's ok commenting on ME for some reason... He then claimed that he preferred we don't speak again if I'm going to talk about my feelings or life, or ask about his family (literally "HOW IS YOUR MOM" is too much for him). So I blocked him and never looked back.

They are afraid of being alone so they put up with all the crap these "friends" do. They have low self esteem and feel that is all they are worth. It's sad 😔
