For those of you who have potty trained puppies before, do you use the crate method?

Yes and no. Dookie control is easy to achieve by always walking the dog immediately after they eat. Both eating and walking stimulate the bowels. So a short walk after grub all but guarantees a number two. Interestingly the same is true for humans.
Peepee can be tougher if you keep your pooch properly hydrated. If they can’t hold it between outings, even crating might not necessarily work. Pee pads and conditioning pups to go increasingly longer between potty breaks is best if you can make the time and/or have additional support. I’m also a proponent of rewards for dogs doing right.

The last time I trained a puppy, I used those pee pads for indoor use. Once the puppy got used to using the pads, I started placing them outside, and taking the puppy to them.

They caught on remarkably quickly. It wasn't long before they started to associate "peeing" with "outside" and then I just stopped using the pads altogether. Never had an issue after that.

No. Puppies tend to follow the pattern sleep-pee-play-sleep-pee. So soon as they wake up take them straight outside and praise them for going.

I did with the most recent puppy and I found it work really well you still got to treat it like a kid and take it potty often I also put my puppy in there when I left the house and went to sleep. Dogs don't like to sleep were they peed

The crate method is for lazy bastards who don’t know how to or not willing to take the time and responsibility to train a dog the right way

You have to restrict space. Don’t give the dog the whole thing. Partition it so it has enough to lie down and nothing more. Put a blanket over it at night.
