Number one being able to walk in and get a complete tour without a reservation. Then going through and seeing the cleanliness of it also asking to see other animals and how they are doing. We have two dogs and a cat my ex always wants to take one of our dogs but not the other 😖. So my other dog is like a upset depressed kid so I take him to a local doggie day care. He loves it they did a screening before her got accepted into the general play area. They wanted to make sure he was non aggressive safety for the other pets. It is very clean and they have 4-6 on staff at all times. They actually have a limit so you need to reserve a spot they don’t just jam as many as they can. I would also check reviews and ask people who you know who may have used one in your area. Our also has a side area the do grooming the owner has been a master groomer for over 20 years.

Reputation online, in person customers, services offered and the conditions where they will be kept.
I tend to adopt homeless dogs who come to me to ask for help.
Otherwise, I would suggest that you adopt a rescue dog who needs to be loved. Rescue kennels are full of such dogs.
I usually adopt senior dogs, so that they can experience being loved during what time they have left.
I am not sure really because i have never personally had to look for one.. If i had to guess, Look for company reputation, Cleanliness, condition of the place where the animal will be living, Weather or not they will take the dog out to play with it and socialize.. Things like that

I'd pick the dog that was the most affectionate 🥺
I always look for stars on them or contact the Better Business Beaura and see if they have any information on them and some places have BBB info on them also it could be on Yelp, you just never know who to trust or who not to trust? Your dog is adorable awww
Look at where the dogs will be kept. Is there anything they can get hurt on? Are dogs walking around in their pee and poop? Do they take them outside? Be sure to get your dog protected for kennel cough. It's very common when dogs stay at the kennel. Check online ratings. Call consumer affairs and see if they have any complaints against them. If customers are there while you are there, ask them about their experience with them.
I'd keep a keen eye to see if the animals are taken caren of properly and with dignity and not mistreated. I won't support a business or shelter that mistreats animals!
I just used to leave mine with her trainer. She adored my pooch and my pooch adored my trainer’s dog. I always knew she was well cared for - spoiled even - when I had to be away and leave her with her trainer.
You should talk to the dogs and ask them if they enjoy their stay there...
#1 Cleanliness, check dog run, play area, and kennel, how are the dogs exercised? together or separately? are they supervised? separated by size? common sense will help you after the basics
I would say seeing any dead dogs would be a bad sign
Many things including responsible veterinary care.
