Who decided skin color should define race and ethnic background?

Before the science evolved, perceivable differences were all that people had. It’s not entirely based on skin color though. There were dramatic differences between the Nordic peoples and those from the Caucasus region, but they’re all “white”. Even ancient people recognized that. It’s only more recently that race baiters have simmered everything down to skin color. There are notable physiological differences between people of varying races beyond skin color. The science showed us that fact, and medical science benefits from that knowledge. At the laymen level there are dozens of misconceptions about the differences too.
Racism has two fundamental sources, ignorance and malice. Pretending that there are no differences between peoples is just as harmful as pretending our differences are all that matters.

It feels like this whole idea was mostly created in Western countries. Where I grew up, people weren't really going around putting everyone into racial categories.


What's even weirder to me is that I still have no idea who is actually supposed to be considered white. Is it just light skin? Blue eyes? Certain facial features? The criteria seem all over the place. The whole concept feels so vague that I'm surprised people still talk about it as if it's something clearly defined.

Why when your dark they always assume your black when other countries people can get real dark?
