When you loan money to a relative, do you really expect to be paid back?

Relatives often ask to borrow some money, and we often give it to them.

They may call it a loan, and say they will pay it back.

But do you really expect them to pay you back?

I learned a long time ago that when I loan money to a relative, it's really not a loan, it's a gift.

Yes its called a loan not a gift. Though I would give more latitude on repayment.

I have gifted money to relatives when things got bad.

I already know what relatives not to lend money to.

IF I loaned money to a relative, I would not expect tp ever have the loan repaid. There is only one relative who I would consider for a loan - my younger brother - but he and his wife are financially secure.

Clarification is very important.

To me, it's a LOAN, especially if they actually asked for financial help and actually said they'd pay back what they borrowed.

When I offer anything without being asked, that's my gift to that person or group.

nope. my grandpa used to say, never lend more than you're willing to lose forever. saves a lot of headaches

No never. If I give money to anyone I never expect to get it back, and if I do, it's a nice surprise. But if someone asks for something, I treat it as a gift, and that's that.

I would never loan a giant amount of money to anyone, period. $100 max for anyone. Do I expect it to be paid back? No I don’t give away money I can’t afford to have back. Which is why I never give anyone more than I have in cash on hand.

I don't want lose relatives that's why I gift something them or just don't give them anything.
