I’ve been watching “Little House on the Prairie” and i kinda dig “maw” and “paw”. When i was very young, i used “mommy” and “daddy”. I’m not exactly sure why, but i moved on to “mom” years before i moved on to “dad”. I had a friend who called his parents by their first names when i was there. I found that uncomfortable so i gave him some back by asking his mother if he did that when i wasn’t there. She said “Nope. He’s showing off for you! He must like you a lot.”
We both laughed aloud as he said “Shut up, Marlene!”. He didn’t stop either. Doubled down in fact.
I kinda dig the “mum” i hear on English TV and movies. Maybe because it’s the only one set apart from American English. Seems “dad” and “daddy” are common there too. Similarly, i took to the Irish “da”, and i seem to remember “mam”, but not “ma”.
How did you address your parents as a child? If you’re a parent now, do your kids follow suit? Or do they address you differently than you addressed your parents?
