Did I accidentally friend-zone him ?

Hello everyone!

So, I met this guy a few weeks back. We got along instantly. We would text everyday talking about just anything. Then, I met up with him and at the end of the night, he was like " I wanna ask you out ". I said yes.

Once I left, he sent me a text right away telling me he enjoyed seeing me. We kept on texting everyday (he initiated most of them).

Then on Tuesday, I asked him a question and I used the word " friends " (to define our situation) as a joke, twice!

I texted him today and he didn't respond at all! He usually responds to me within the minute. Always.

Does he think I just want to be friends ? Did I friend zone him?

I ended up sending him a flirty text and it got him talking. He even responded to my other text right after.

Also, it made him mention our next date weirdly enough.


Guess I should be careful when I use the word " friends " when talking to a guy I'm interested in.

You don't seem to understand the friend zone.

In your situation, he would only be friend zoned if you saw him as a friend and as nothing more. This is not the case. You just mistakenly used the word friens which might send him some conflicting signals. As you did, the best way to do that was to send an overly flirty message to get your true feelings across.

Just be very careful with the word friend. It is used as a cop out by girls who can't just stick to saying no all too often.

Yeah you made him think you're not interested him romantically/sexually.

Its easy to fix though, just tell him that you like him and didn't mean to mislead him. Make sure to tell him that he is cute/sexy/hot to boost his ego and to drive your point home. :)

it's possible. if you want to show him that you meant it differently, invite him to your house and get "physical". This will at least let him know that you are potentially friends with benefits, instead of juts friends.

No, we haven't. But after meeting up he was like " I hope we can work something out ". Like, he was really interested in seeing me again. Ever since I used the word " friends " he literally fell off the face of the earth.

Guess there's not much you can do at this point if he's not replying, he's not that interested.

However, the word friends didn't appear as a joke. He said something about politics and I said " I'm afraid we can't be friends, I'm sorry ". So, the word friends was part of the joke but it wasn't the object of the joke. Hence my question.

Right, but he's not contacting you. Whatever transpired in your conversation is moot since he's not showing interest in you any longer.

It's pretty tough to accidentally friend zone a guy. If you're showing any sexual interest and it increases over time he knows he's not in the zone. Going out on a date is pretty inconsistent with being in the friend zone.
