In the earliest recorded days of fashion, there literally was no such thing as children's fashion. Most clothing worn by adults was simply cut down to child like sizing with no special attention paid to the needs of a child.

Then came the roaring 20s, an era which is often spoken about in regards to women being liberated in some of their styling with both hair and dress, but it is also the start of children's clothing in earnest. During this period, instead of hunking on the many layers of adult clothing onto children, single layers of clothing over underwear became the style for children. Girls long heavy skirts and petticoats, gave way to light cotton clothing or clothing made of a sturdy material that was made to withstand the wear and tear of a child's play. Boys too began to see more outfits tailored with shorts to allow for more movement and ease at play.

Now in the modern era, we have whole stores dedicated just to children's clothing often employing softer lighter fabrics and designs with key objects they are learning about like numbers, and animals, and bright colors. We are also in an era where a lot of parents want to share their style sensibilities with their children by going back to the days of mini me fashions that re-emerged in the 50s and 80s.
