Combination of wearing waist cinchers and wearing clothing that creates the hourglass shape. 50's dresses, especially, were tailored so that they accentuate the waistline. If you notice, these dresses are tapered close to the waistline and then flow outwards at the bottom, creating that distinct hourglass shape. Even chubbier women look great in these dresses because they have the illusion that they're thinner due to where the dress is tapered.
Problem with women today is that they wear clothing that doesn't suit their body types, clothing not meant for their size, and don't get things tailored. They just attempt to squeeze into whatever they can just because other girls do.

They were not natural! Many women in the 50s-60s used corsets and binding to achieve that hourglass shape.
People were still recovering from wearing corsets? 🙃
I think it used to be common for women to wear corsets then.
Aren't all of those people models? Hence their ability to get into a photograph?
Obesity wasn't normalized back then.
