From what I learned about reading women's points of views on several websites and apps, mostly because the fashion industry is mainly controlled by men, and men design what they THINK women want, instead of what women ACTUALLY want. So what you end up is with something that's almost 100% fashion, and 0% function. May arguably look nice, but is often too tight and no pockets. Also, something else I also think makes sense, so that women buy purses due to the lack of pockets, hence more money for the companies.
I'm personally not the type of guy to wear huge cargo shorts with like 8-10 deep pockets, or super baggy clothes. 2-4 small to medium pockets to just fit my keys and/or a phone or wallet is fine. But most women's clothes don't even have that... either pockets so absurdly small you can only fit in like a quarter, or sometimes even fake pockets. So I can understand where women are coming from on this one.
Even though I've never been the type to over-stuff my pockets, it would be really lame to need an entire purse or backpack just simply because of my keys and/or wallet or phone. I've never really faced this issue since basically all men's pants and shorts have decent pockets, but I know it'd suck.

For same reason as kids and ladies menu?
I remember hearing the answer to this one before:
It stems from socioeconomic trends during the transition from coin-based currencies to bank notes. Prior to the introduction of bank notes, everyone had coin purses, and carried little with them. As men were the ones who made money, during this time, men's clothes added pockets to accommodate billfolds as well as a few extra things.
As we got more modernized, the purse took on a new form as an over-the-shoulder handbag for women that was large enough to accommodate most things you'd leave the house with. Women who carry purses don't necessarily NEED pockets, therefore they weren't included. This saved time and materials for tailors.

I assume it’s because women typically carry handbags, so they don’t need pockets for their belongings. I personally don’t understand it, I don’t use handbags so I wish more womens pants had pockets 😅

Because most women don't want them. Why? Hell if I know; I'm a former six-year-old boy, and well acquainted with the joy of pockets. I suspect it's mostly a matter of inertia, though; women don't look for pants with real pockets (if it can't hold more than three jelly beans, it's not a real pocket) because women's pants don't have them, and they don't have them because women don't demand them. They complain, certainly, but don't put their money where their mouths are. Or they do, and just buy men's pants.
If I'm mistaken, then there's a vast untapped market out there- but I doubt it.Because girls' clothes are mostly body-shaping, they will not show their figure if they put things in their pockets. Moreover, girls need to bring more things when they go out, and the pockets are not enough, so they will bring bags.
I think there is also an important factor, if there are so many pockets in women's clothing and men's design, the sales of bags will be affected to a certain extent. You what I detest even more? . . . finding a style/design that suits me nicely only to find out that the pockets are fake! That is so disappointing.
Assuming your statement is true, it would be because most women are dumb enough to buy pants without pockets.
I see this a lot where very "girly girl" type of women, buy clothing like they are some kind of status symbol or collectable.
Stop doing that, give up on fashion, stop buying the overpriced brand name stuff the rest of us don't care about, and only buy clothing if you need to because your old clothing is worn out or has holes, and you will see pockets on your pants again. They assume that women have purses and don't need pockets
Because then they couldn't sell you handbags. Handbags would be useless if women's pants have pockets. It's an artificially created need.
If they had women would less likely buy handbags.
There are many handbags where just a phone and a wallet fits in. No woman would buy that if they would fit in a woman´s pant pocket. Not sure buy what i have heard is that is to earn more... its whole set up thing n the girls pockets are way smaller than guys ones even if they have... so that they cannot put anything else but card or cash or very thin n small item so they gotta buy bags n purses n wallets for stuff
Obviously for purse companies to benefit from the additional money.
They do it on purpose. This is 21st century and those traditions are long gone.Hmm, I never noticed. I guess they're used to wearing dresses and having to carry a handbag or just stash a phone and credit down their top, so no need.
What's with those denim hot-pants then, that are so short you see the pockets hanging out the bottom? No idea. Best I can say is "because women buy them anyway". And they buy them anyway probably because they look good and they already have a purse.
Like I think the consumer has a lot of power here, and women should try to start a trend of pants with pockets. I think it could take off.I don't know, but it's pretty annoying, I like having pockets
Maybe because they don’t need them because women tend to carry purses and handbags that they put everything in? Guys don’t tend to have purses or handbags so they get the pockets. It’s not a sexist thing but women just gotta make everything out to be against them. 🍌
Guys in these comments really assuming that women don’t want pockets and we all carry purses 🤣🤣🤣
When they do they are so small they aren’t functional anyway.
I believe it's a fashion influence most designers are trying to get a close fit hugging your figure, to add pockets to that then potentially ruins the fit when you start putting things like a Mobile phone or any other big items in your pockets.
In a contrast men's clothing is generally more baggy so pockets don't always bulge out the same and bulges are in general less noticeable. My pockets are sewn into my husband's pants. He carries whatever I can't fit in my purse. 😂😂😂
Two main reasons:
1) most women have a handbag of some sort they carry what men put in their pockets
2) most clothing historically was designed by men and they tried to flatter the female figure by designing clothing that hugged the hips and accentuate the female form, or "ass". They (we) don't want our favourite view obstructed by wallets and cellphones...My mom thinks it is a plot against her. I have to agree. I have some really comfortable gym shorts of some kind that she gave me that are women's. There is no good reason why the only pocket on the thing could only store a new born mouse.
Because the world is filled with quick fashion, especially for women's clothes. Easier to take shortcuts and not make good pockets.
