Visiting a public space (ex. shops) without shoes, or even socks. Is this weird or what?

I've looked into this, and apparently in many nations of the South Pacific (ex. Australia, New Zealand, Tonga, Fiji), it's perfectly normal, and no one will look at you twice. In other parts of the world however (ex. Europe, North America), you can expect some strange glances at the very least.
Anyway, what say you? Acceptable... or not?

Disgusting. You can catch parasites walking around outside without at least a sandal.

There's a worm in the soil of Africa and the southern united states that you can catch this way and it can knock off 20 IQ points and cause lethargy. It's one of the main reasons that the south was such a screwed up place particularly before modern medicine.

In some countries is totally acceptable, even in Indian places that are considered sacred you need to remove your shoes, that’s a great example… in other ones people look at you weird because they are used to wear shoes all day for protection and comfort.
In my opinion people can do whatever they want the way they feel comfortable and don’t disturb others. 😁

She’s right, it’s not uncommon in Australia. Not everyone would go barefoot but it’s definitely normal to come straight from the beach or forget your shoes to public places. Even just wearing toggs (swimming apparel like bikinis or just trunks) to the shops isn’t weird for younger people.

The ground is NEVER that dirty to get feet dirty enough in that pic tough.

Generally your feet get tougher so you don’t notice little stones.
The biggest threats are bits of glass from broken bottles but it’s unlikely you would walk into without seeing it and the RARE the bits you too small to see don’t do that much damage.

I remember that whenever I did it in the Netherlands, I'd get tons of looks. But here in an South-east Asian country, I'm barefoot all the time and nobody bats an eye.

In the US, barefoot is rare. In fact, many stores have signs next to the door that says shoes and shirts are required.
