Why do you think, in general, that people dislike long hair on men?

So my brother started growing my hair out six years ago and it's around waist length now (there are pictures on my profile if you'd like to see / give advice) I've noticed over the years that neither woman or men really like it; despite it being just hair and that it should not matter.

Why do you think that is?

Styles come and go.
In the 70s I had long hair because it was popular. Plus was a rock musician. The chicks loved me.

I got my hair cut in 1980 when I was 26 because I got handed a really good corporate job. At first, I had a hard time adjusting to my new look and didn't fit in with "my people" any more.

I did find that short hair was much easier to care for. I also fit in better with normal people and didn't look like a rebel druggie. So I could actually get away with a lot more when I had shorter hair.

I didn't have any trouble getting girlfriends when I had short hair, either.

I started playing music again in around 2005. I got a band together and started growing my hair out in 2012 or so. This time, though, my wife who is a hairstylist did a good job of shaping it.
By 2020, my hair was down almost to my shoulder blades in back and feathered on the sides. It looked good.
Then the covid mandates hit and my band broke up. I decided that my hair was a hassle and cut it shorter again.

Different people have different styles. I think long hair is still acceptable if it looks good. And there is a difference between semi-long and really long hair.

The thing about not having short hair is, it shows that you have a healthy head of hair. A lot of women like that.
Plus, it shows a certain level of coolness.

Long hair is sort of a status symbol of being able to maintain all that maintenance and keep it beautiful. I had long hair, and it was a pain in the ass to maintain, so I cut it.

Now if you have the hair, but don't maintain it... it's just like a chick that doesn't brush her hair. She should give up and go get the Karen haircut. She's too fucking lazy to even brush her damn hair, which means she's probably too lazy to workout and is probably also fat... all wobbling around with fat sausage fingers. It's like a dude with an expensive watch, but he doesn't take a bath or brush his teeth. Then he complains about not getting a girlfriend and being an INCEL while he points at his fancy watch like that was supposed to get him all the pussy.

Anyways, I got compliments constantly on my long hair... so I'm guessing your brother doesn't make it look good. It's not that he's a man with long hair, it's just he's a man with shitty long hair that looks like shit on him. Have him try an undercut with braids like a Viking... bet you that will get a bunch of positive feedback. I'm guessing that kind of effort just isn't there though... I'm right huh.

There was a time in their lives when my brothers (both older than me) grew their hair very long and the long hair look was awesome on them.

When were dating, my husband also had long hair and he, too, looked awesome with long hair.

As long as they can maintain a clean look (unlike an unbathed homeless hobo), I don't mind if they grow their hair long again.

Men are not very good at taking caring and maintaining long hair. Most men don’t have the patience or understand the importance of getting regular trims and regular hydrating treatments on long hair.

Probably because it makes him look like he is a headbanger, which unfortunately most headbangers received a bad reputation of being bad news or a troubled person ( Delinquent). Or it can make him look like a girl if he isn’t a headbanger. In cultures where long hair is normal on men it has religious connotations like the Chinese pigtail or Sikhs and there is a quality of a burden about it.

Men typically have more active lives and even in stone age probably felt annoyed at hair catching on branches while sneaking up on game animals. So more motivation to cut.

@danielamontoya06 A gentleman in my Yoga class has grown very long hair AND a beard and mustache. He is a retired fireman, has a BEAUTIFUL wife, and from what I see has nice features and would be a good looking guy W/O the long hair. I don't understand his reasoning for it, as in the YOGA class, which is most times, very intense, the hair really gets messy looking. Most women in the class pull their hair back or tie it back

Men with long hair just dont' know how to keep it from looking bad.

since maybe the 19th century in western cultures, short hair is the male standard. only guys with certain aesthetics/lifestyles or younger people when it's trendy have it. it's disliked by many people because it's associated with certain subcultures, it's less common to see, and if it's very long it can be seen as feminine.

Oh I don't dislike it.. but it MUST be clean and nice , it really needs to be clean ALL the time , it's lots of work , I'm a shaved head dude but I loved my long surfy style hair in 70s / 80s , not every guy loved it , but I found women were positive.

I think long hair gives the impression of someone interesting and inhairently different. See that with some genuine kindness and it's hard not to strike the interest of others. But act a fool and look more of a bum than a male with a clean cut.

it's likely more to do with his face and the fact it is waist length that makes people not like it. also take into account a lot of guys with hair that long are generally unattractive in other ways and don't take care of their appearance. in general i believe women prefer medium to long hair on men, sometimes a buzz cut works depending on the guy and context.

For the same reason really short hair on women is disliked by most. Both long hair on men and short hair on women are more attractive on the opposite sex. There are very few women who look good enough to have short hair and still look feminine. Likewise, there are very few men who are masculine enough to pull off long hair without looking feminine.

The problem is usually a lot of people look ugly in long hair. The person cannot come out and say "you look fucking ugly!" so just say "that hair is bad" instead.

Long hair looks feminine. It's an attractive feature on women but generally not on men. Can a man who looks good anyway still look good with longer hair? Sure. But on the average man, I suspect it would make him look below average.
