7 moNot wearing a bra is still considered unusual due to a combination of historical tradition, social pressure, and the sexualization of the female body. While bralessness is increasingly common, particularly among younger generations, it still challenges deeply ingrained conventions about female presentation.
Historical and social traditions
The legacy of the corset: For centuries, Western women wore corsets to shape their bodies according to the beauty standards of the era. The modern bra, patented in 1913, continued this tradition of controlling and shaping the female form, but in a less restrictive way.
A "proper" look: Over time, the bra became a standardized garment for women to achieve a "proper," "controlled" silhouette, in contrast to the visible movement and natural shape of unsupported breasts. This expectation is not based on medical necessity, as health experts have noted that there is no particular medical reason to wear a bra.
Workplace dress codes: For a long time, traditional professional dress codes have reinforced the norm of wearing a bra. These codes often focus on avoiding distraction, and a braless silhouette was seen as violating this principle. While many modern workplaces are becoming more inclusive, these older expectations persist.
The sexualization of the female body
For the "male gaze": The social discomfort surrounding bralessness is heavily influenced by the sexualization of the female body. Some have argued that the expectation for women to wear a bra is a cultural development that is tied to society's insistence that breasts conform to an attractive, perky shape for the benefit of the "male gaze".
Fear of being judged: Many women worry about what others will think if they go braless, fearing they will be labeled as "promiscuous" or "loose". This kind of social judgment can lead to anxiety and self-consciousness.
Unsolicited opinions: Women who don't wear bras, particularly those with larger chests, may receive unsolicited and inappropriate comments from others. This social pressure forces many women to prioritize others' comfort over their own.
Normalization and changing attitudes
Attitudes towards bralessness are changing, especially among younger women. However, older generations who grew up with more rigid expectations of female dress may hold onto these norms, causing generational divides. The normalization of not wearing a bra is also gaining momentum through wider conversations about:
Personal comfort: A growing emphasis is being placed on comfort and personal choice, with some women prioritizing their own well-being over conforming to social standards.
Body positivity: Movements like #FreeTheNipple and general body positivity are challenging the stigma associated with the natural female form and promoting acceptance of all body types.
Evolving social norms: As younger generations enter the workforce and positions of power, they are challenging outdated dress code policies and helping to redefine what is considered professional and appropriate. Why is not wearing a bra still seen as unusual?
Not wearing a bra is still considered unusual
due to a combination of historical fashion trends, patriarchal social norms, and the sexualization and policing of women's bodies. The expectation that women's breasts should be contained and shaped has been deeply ingrained in many cultures for centuries, making going braless a noticeable deviation from the norm.
Social and cultural factors
A "civilized" aesthetic. The practice of wearing breast-shaping garments dates back to ancient civilizations. Following the restrictive corsets of the 19th century, bras became mainstream in the 20th century as a "modern" way to lift and shape the bust. This cemented the cultural ideal that "perky breasts are desirable" and that wearing a bra is the proper, modest way to present oneself.
Sexualization and policing. Women's breasts and nipples are heavily sexualized in many cultures. The absence of a bra, which can allow nipples to be visible or the natural movement of breasts to be apparent, is often seen as provocative or inappropriate. This perception puts pressure on women to wear a bra for the comfort of others, with their bodies scrutinized and judged if they do not conform.
The "bra-burning" myth. During the 1968 Miss America protest, feminists disposed of items they viewed as tools of female oppression into a "freedom trash can". While no bras were actually burned, the sensationalized, inaccurate media coverage created the enduring myth of "bra-burning" feminists. This caricature was used to trivialize and denigrate the larger women's rights movement and further stigmatized the choice to go braless.
Gendered expectations
The double standard. A significant reason that going braless is seen as unusual is the gendered double standard around nipples. Society has no expectation for men to conceal their nipples, even in warm weather. The mandate that women's chests must be covered, regardless of comfort, is a prime example of an arbitrary social rule that is imposed upon one gender.
Internalized pressure. Many girls are taught from a young age that wearing a bra is necessary and normal. For some, this is reinforced by bullying or the feeling of being sexualized by peers, while others simply internalize the social pressure to conform. As a result, many adult women feel ashamed or self-conscious without a bra, even if they would prefer not to wear one.
Modern shift in perspective
Despite the stigma, there has been a growing shift away from the compulsory nature of wearing a bra, particularly among younger generations.
Body positivity. A new emphasis on body positivity and natural beauty has encouraged women to accept and appreciate their bodies for what they are.
Personal choice. The focus has increasingly moved from social convention to personal choice. Women are choosing to go braless for a variety of reasons, including comfort, health, and a rejection of outdated norms.
Feminist progress. As feminism continues to challenge patriarchal norms and fight for bodily autonomy, the pressure to wear a bra is loosening. For many, the choice to go braless is a way to reclaim ownership over their bodies.00 Reply

7 moThere is no law against it. If that is what appeals to you do it. It more clearly declares what type of girl you are so guys can more easily decipher what they are looking for and what category women go into.

We do have laws against women going topless. What's fine for a man is considered "indecent exposure" for a woman. That seems sort of fucked up, doesn't it?

No. Actually having a code of morals and decency and honor is actually a very good thing. Having shame against vile things is very, very good for a healthy society.
When society throws off all morals and lives by "I'll just do whatever I want, anything goes, all morality and etiquette be gone" that is when you end up with no marriages, the birthrate is imploding, endless kids grow up in single parent homes and studies show many of those will become criminals and druggies, threesomes and swinging is considered normal, women kill their kids in mass, half of the population has herpes, one fifth of the young girls are on Onlyfans and prostituting themselves.
This is what total life without any morals gets you.
Freedom for people without any morals or character results in degenerate anarchy that will destroy society.
Yeah. - 7 mo
So in your warped mind you have the right to define "decency" and "honor" for everyone else according to your subjective opinions based on some primitive religion of lies. And you've decided a woman's chest is a vile thing. That is truly a sick mind at work.
You can go suck Jesus's dick and fuck off. Your religion is dying. The faster we can make that happen, the better off humanity will be. - 7 mo

Better off?
"They will call evil good and good evil"
Here is the fruit right here. Society is better when everyone is as hedonistic as they want.
Hmmmm, mass shootings from soulless, nihilistic people, abortions everywhere, trying to keep kids not exposed to porn by age 10 is almost impossible, murders galore, everyone is addicted to alcohol, drugs, homeless all over the streets in CA, crime and strife everywhere, birth rate is in shambles.
LOL. Off to the ditch you go... blind. - 7 mo
Yup, you are a totally mentally unwell cult dweller. Thanks for the view into the way your mind works.
Cultural context truly shapes perspectives..
In many parts of Asia, not wearing a bra is uncommon, cause social norms place a strong emphasis on modesty n moral conduct, especially in more religious communities..
In Western cultures, it’s largely just a personal choice..
At the end of the day, it’s never about proving anything to anyone else, it’s about honoring your own comfort, preferences, n boundaries.. 😌
N those who truly notice? They recognize depth, integrity, n authenticity..
Not just what’s on the surface, but the quiet strength beneath..00 Reply
7 moCause most women wear them. So if most women wear bras not wearing one is unusual by definition.
Why do most women wear bras is a better question. For me it's two reasons. I don't have the biggest boobs in the world, but I don't like them bouncing around when going up and down the stairs. It makes me feel extremely self conscious, I also like how some bras make me look, but when I get home it's the first thing that comes off lol

Going braless can still be seen as unusual due to long-standing societal norms and expectations that dictate what is considered appropriate or professional, especially for women. Fashion trends, body image perceptions, and conservative attitudes have maintained these standards. However, with growing movements advocating for body positivity and personal comfort, more people are challenging these norms, promoting acceptance, and embracing choice over convention.

7 moI have no idea. It seems pretty childish to be that infatuated with the fatty tissue on a woman's chest.

7 moMost men like it. Most women don't, I think. The hint of exhibitionism bothers them.
