Why do some people constantly brag about their expensive clothes?

I’ve got a few friends who constantly brag about their expensive clothes—especially their fancy bras. They’re always flexing about them. It feels really weird to me. I wear expensive bras myself, but I’ve never thought of it as anything special. Have you ever noticed this kind of behavior in anyone?

Just completely inane conversation between shallow, insecure women trying to impress and "one up" each other for position in their social group. They are ruthless about putting each other down and making each other feel bad with comments that are vague enough to not be an obvious insult. Just one reason I'm very resistant to getting dragged into conversations with a group of women when I'm out. On the other hand it can be hilarious to watch and if I'm feeling playful, I'll even stoke the fires a little.

To be fair, some guys do the same sort of thing for the same reasons. But it's cars or golf clubs or watches or some other materialistic bangle they can flaunt.
