Somebody needs to help me out here.
I know guys are the stereotypical morons when it comes to the art of flirting. We're the ones who make the obvious mistakes, say the wrong things, make moves when we shouldn't, and generally get all flustered and confused. I mean, it's the premise of just about every male/female comedy, really.
But in my experience, it's women who just totally suck when it comes to flirting. Are they doing it this badly on purpose or something? WTF's the deal? Is it because I'm in the U.S.? Is it just American girls that suck at this art form? Check this out, American women came in second to last when it comes to flirting, according to a recent study:
I'm just wondering if there's always this stereotype that men have to do all the work, which includes the first approach. I thought we'd moved past the "guys always have to make the first move" garbage but that doesn't appear to be the case, in reality or online. If you use online dating sites like I have, I'm convinced girls just sit there and wait for messages, while it's only the men who actually send introductory emails. Am I wrong? Sure as sh** doesn't feel like I'm wrong.
And what about in bars and other places where singles hang out? It always seems like guys are the ones agonizing about ways to approach girls, and girls don't have to do anything. They can either laugh in the face of the guy, or if they like him, they can smile and laugh and bat their eyes. Oh gee, that's hard to do.
Maybe it's just not in the girl's DNA to flirt. Maybe it goes all the way back to freakin' Elizabethan times, when it was guys who sang the sonnets outside the girl's windows. Maybe we're still just stuck in the rut where women receive and play defense, and men are always the aggressors. Outdated? Sure. Sexist? Yeah, probably. But you girls don't seem to be doing anything to change it.
I just think you're no good at flirting because you never really have to do it. You just wait for the guy to do it. Guys might actually have to get better at flirting if they want to get into a relationship, while girls simply have to choose which guy flirted best. Isn't that the long and short of it? C'mon, fess up girls, you've got it easy in this respect. And by the way, all you have to do is check the Flirting category of this site to see lots of girls who seem totally and completely lost.
And let me add one thing: I really love women who know how to flirt. They're rare but boy, do they know how to make an impression. I believe if women didn't always wait for guys to make a move, and the girls started to perfect the art of flirting, the single scene would get a lot more interesting.
Disclaimer: Acting like a slut isn't flirting. There's a subtle science to it so don't make the mistake of believing that chicks who throw themselves at guys have any clue how to flirt. They're just not all that selective. ;)
