Why do guys tease/are mean to the girl they like?

So I like a boy, and I'm 99% he likes me too because of all the small, subtle things he does (he glances at me all the time, his touches linger, he sits next to me in class, etc.) but when our other classmates are around he starts being mean to me. (even when they're not around) like he'll judge my outfit, or he'll point out my flaws like my messy hair or whatever. sometimes his teasing really hurts because he can get a bit overboard, but whenever I really show that I dislike it, he'll start treating me softer. Like one time he even said "Yeah sorry I was really mean just now, I'll be nicer from now on." and he kept the door open for me and was just really sweet. But the next moment, he's mean again. It's like a natural reaction when I say something or look at him, I feel like he doesn't know how to deal with me?

He's embarrassed to show intimacy around the classmates. Why wouldn't he be? People judge. He's probably aware that people tease their crushes. I don't know why people do it, but I think most people do it. He is probably accidentally going overboard. Maybe he doesn't know what overboard is, maybe he doesn't know how else to show you that he likes you. Sometimes teasing each other playfully back and forth can be funny.

Teasing is a big part of flirting, he's just trying to be funny and grab your attention. He'll do what ever he can as long as your eyes are on him. Just let him know when you think he's going over board, he is still getting to know you so he does not know your boundaries, if you keep correcting him, he'll learn your boundaries and know how far he can go without hurting your feelings, best thing you can do is tease him back or play hit him, guys love that!

Young men are likely to do this. It's just how they are. Some are just being actual douche bags and are really just teasing you, and some do this to be flirty. God knows why young men think that being mean to a girl is the way to get her, but they do. It's like elementary school all over again. Put him in his place. Whether he is being flirt or not, don't let a guy treat you like that. If he is going to try and win you over, let him know that's not the way.

I don't give advise and not take it. It's complicated for reasons that are not about guys being jerks. It has to do with someone who lives very far away and future plans, family, and distance have made things hard. Like I said, irrelevant to this question AND you.
