I'm not sure it's as clear cut as others have suggested. For example I have had very strong feelings for someone, however due to various factors I have felt confused by my own emotions. Therefore if it's complicated, he might simply be asking for more time to decide what he wants to happen. I think this happens to most people in most relationships but some people vocalise it and others don't.

And I doubt it's really all that complicated. If you were 18 I'd advise you to just give it time. But 36-45 is old enough to talk about it like adults. I'm sure you won't shatter into pieces if he's honest about not being certain about you.

well, it depends, usually when a guy tells you this, it means that he doesn't want to get, toooo involved quite yet, he might be trying to keep his options open. He might also have someone else in mind. Next time he says its complicated, ask him, what does that mean?

It usually means that he has a hard time figuring it out himself. Men are not very emotional creatures, so when they get outbursts of emotion, they tend to get overwhelmed processing it all. I would suggest giving him a little bit of time to figure it out and let him know when he does, to let you know.
