A while ago my ex and me decided things were not working out for us. So we thought we would go onto a just friends basis. However, I am still very protective over her (not that she minds), for instance if some guy tries to force his way into her pants or upsets, I am always on the scene to beat the living sh*t out of him. What my question is, is that is it normal for a guy to be protective over his ex?

Look, it clearly shows that you really care for her and her feelings. Either you still like her and have not been able to realize that yourself or your still used to protecting her from pervs. Normally I would say no, but it does happen time to time that one will be protective over an EX. This has to do with the relationship they had prior EX status. I suggest just lightening up a tiny bit but I see nothing wrong with what your doing unless she tells you specifically to stop. Yes, it is very normal. I have a few ex boyfriends like that. You cared about her then, and care about her now. The best way to show that is by protecting her when harm comes her way.

And when/if she has a different boyfriend, make sure you do not jeopardize that relationship because if you do, it could also ruin your friendship with the girl you care about.

No sounds like you both need to put more distance between you and let each other go. Friends aren't that protective of each other it just looks to me like neither of you want to fully ler go of your old relationship. Your still holding on by being protective and she's still holding on by letting you.
