Stop caring about whether they mind. They either do or they don't and it mostly depends on how attractive they find you, which you can't really know before you talk to her.

If all guys followed the "I'd generally rather you didn't" rules women put out there (don't cold approach, don't talk to her when she's "busy", don't hit on her when she's just in the club/bar to party with her friends, don't chat up coworkers, etc...) then most women would die single and surrounded by cats.

Almost all of us are average looking, and virtually everyone dates and has sex at some point in their life. You don't have to be "universally attractive" to get a girl.

If I found him cute and liked his personality I'd be interested. One average guy can be unattractive to some and extremely attractive to others.
