How should a guy respond if you compliment him?

I'm a very affectionate person and I enjoy making other people feel good. So I often compliment the people that I care about. But not too often where it doesn't seem sincere or they become immune to it. I just know that what a guy finds as a compliment, might not be the same as a woman. Today I told my guy friend through text...

"Just wanna say thanks for always being there to talk to! Even when its something silly, or whether I'm wrong or right. You're a great friend. You accept my strengths as well as forgive me for my faults & I appreciate it very much! :D"

He replied, "You're welcome :-)" he's never been much for talking a lot over texts. So I didn't expect some mushy sentimental response lol

Just from a guys opinion...was that a good response? Do you believe he appreciated it?

Yes he appreciated it because he responded how he did. Not only is he a guy but you said he's not a big talker. I'm the say way, I probably wouldn't have responded how you talked to me. Not just that, but some people are just bad with compliments. Sometimes I'm too modest and I don't like receiving compliments, gifts, favors, etc. I don't mean anything by it, I just feel put on the spot or awkward by it.

Thanks! you're right...some people are just bad with compliments and don't know how to respond. I know a lot of people like that. I just have to learn to relate, because I love telling the people who matter to me...that they're important and what makes them great. But honestly...i'm very modest when it comes to receiving compliments myself. So I guess I can relate :)

A good way to handle him is to keep doing what you do, but sort of make it one sided. What I mean by that is tell him what you appreciate about him but say it in a way that you don't necessarily need a response. This will give him the time to respond when he feels like he has the words, plus it lets you show your appreciation like you say you naturally do.

The smiley face is his expression of appreciation, if he just said "You're welcome" then it could have been taken that he didn't appreciate it, but the smiley is a dead give away

Thanks for the advice guys! and I know women are a more verbally affectionate than men sometimes...so is it okay if I compliment him like that in general? I mean do men like compliments? ha ha or should I be less sentimental and more lighthearted...

when I get compliments, I don't really know how to respond. I like them obviously, but my responses probably aren't as "sappy" or whatever as ones that a girl would give

There's two ways you can see this. In my opinion he can either really accept it and on the other hand he can be wanting more of you (that's if you guys have a "thing" for each other or you guys are attracted to each other) but overall I think it's a good thing for what he said. I really can't tell exactly since I don't know what you guys actually talked about but keep talking, it was a good response :)

The difference between men and women is... Men are attracted to what they see and women are attracted to what they hear. They just want to hear that they are cared for, special to you, and appreciated... that is how you win a girl's heart, and when she knows that, that is when it becomes more than a friendship.

i was ok... I only say that because you say he isn't much into longer text... but I know if I been texted a person or someone really knows me... they know if I responded to that text THAT simply and short, something was wrong... but that's just me I don't know =P

Yeah, its different with different people. I have two guy friends who talk ALOT...but the majority of them don't talk a whole lot. They're very brief and to the point...but still care about me a lot. I just have to learn to view things from the way they think...instead of the way I think haha

I would say that guys are not used to getting compliments from girls. So usually they are not good to express feelings in that regard. So don't take it personal if he is short. It is just that he doesn't know what to say without sounding wierd. I agree that the smiley he wrote is an indication that he was feeling happy about what you said.

Thanks so much! what you said made a lot of sense :) a lot of my guy friends aren't that good at expressing their feelings...and since I'm very open about mine, sometimes I take it as they don't like to hear it ha ha but I know that its prob that they just don't know how to talk about it without feeling awkward

I probably would've responded with something like "I think you are an amazing person and I'm glad I have you in my life." but I think it comes with a certain maturity and life experience to be able to appreciate and respond in a nice way when you get complimented.

Thanks :) yeah...very few of my guy friends talk that detailed. Well at first they do, when we're in that happy phase of everything...then once we've known each other forever...they're less sentimental. If I confront them about the lack of enthusiasm, they just say "you know I care about you alot!" and get mad that I don't already know that I'm important to them ha ha they just don't seem to realize, it's nice to hear it occasionally :P

When a guy gets a compliment he usually gets a bit coy about it and will give a response like *in mock cockney Gangster accent* "stop iiitttttt!" But yeah it feels good to receive a compliment from a lady.

Guys aren't used to getting compliments. From anybody. When we do, we usually don't show emotion. We like it, but we hardly ever show it. We may have a blank face on but inside we're beaming

Yeah he appreciated it for sure. Being a guy and have received something like that every now and then, I don't really know what to say when I get them. Most guys aren't going to dive into some deep emotional conversation.

Thanks for the advice! and hey, it wasn't cheesy...it's being honest. People always try to find 'cool' ways to say things, instead of just saying them straight out & end up not getting the actual point across. If I just said "you're great!" its a nice compliment. but that's not him understanding want him to know is so great about him. He's known me for five yrs, he knows my character.
