When a guy lingers after saying goodbye is he waiting for me to hug him?

I think my friend likes me a little more than a friend but I often get mixed Messages from him, I tell myself he’s not into me and then feel nuts because he will then say or do something which suggests otherwise. A few of us went camping this weekend and early this morning myself and him were out walking the dogs, we bumped into each other a chatted for a while, he pulled up a chair for me, rather close but not uncomfortably close and we sat facing each other and just discussed life. Other friends came to join us and the day went on. At the end of the day, he came over before he left and said goodbye, I said bye and wished him a safe journey home and he stood for a moment as if he were about to say or do something but I didn’t want to assume he wanted a hug and hug him incase he thought I was weird for hugging him! But why would he linger?
