How do I ask out the cute bookstore cashier guy?

So there is this guy who works at the local bookstore that I frequent every now and then. For about a year now I have noticed him, but more recently I have developed a crush on him. I would like to get to know him and possibly ask him out on a date.

I am quite shy and tend to stumble on my words when nervous, and I really don't want to make a fool out of myself when approaching him since I want to be able to go back to that establishment in the future. I am also terrible with smalltalk.

So what do I do? I could ask for help finding a book or something, but any regular customer can do that; how do I show I am interested? Take it to the next level? From customer to possible date? I realize now that he won't be the one asking for my number since that would be a no-no, so it has to be me.

I should also add that I am in my late twenties and so is he. Sadly, the getting one of my girlfriends to do the asking as I did in HS is out of the question! I got out of a three year relationship recently and my flirting skills are a bit rusty! I only make eye contact but then shy away... lol. Help!

Next time your in there just go up doing whatever you're doing (browsing or actually shopping) and just talk a little about whatever it is you're doing then ask him when he get's off his shift and if he's busy after. If you're in a setting where it isn't customer and employee he'll open up and talk more and you also won't have other people standing there trying to get him to help them out.

Whatever you do, keep it simple. Just ask if he wants to get some coffee or something like that. You can set up a real date like a dinner or movie or one of your places after, you need be able to get him into a completely informal setting first though.

Ask about the book like you said and see if a conversation naturally develops from there...if he wants to talk, if he's smiling and helpful...that sort of thing...Sounds like you have good taste! Book store guys... =)
