Partly because everyone flirts, to some degree everyone finds it pleasurable and fun to do. It's a natural part of human interaction.
The other aspect I would put it on is a faction of modern culture that REVOLVES around cheating. For some people it's become sport to have a girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife and to challenge themselves to have an affair... Or as many as they can till it all falls apart. It's possibly a form of an addiction disorder. They're addicted to the spicy beginning of a relationship when they find out that a long term relationship doesn't feature that past the first few months.

@aaronbw I think the difference in what we are talking about is a matter of definitions. Friendly, casual conversation is not flirting and that is fine. To me, flirting is conversation that has a goal of expressing sexual/romantic interest and determining whether the interest is reciprocated. That is NOT okay for a married man.

Flirting is fun, it's an ego boost and it's energising. It gives a similar feeling as a girls night with nail polish and movies can give actually, as it's social and makes you feel good about yourself.

Depends on the situation, for some of us that's just the way we talk to women, kind and sweet (old fashioned? Maybe you would call it), it has nothing to do with wanting sex just being polite. Then there's the guys that will hit on anything with legs even if they are with someone to try and get as much sex as possible. I was raised to treat women with respect and treat them as well as I possibly can, I'm not flirting or hitting on a girl it's just how I was brought up. Now if I was calling her sexy or saying she has a nice ass, but if I tell a girl I met and decide to strike up a conversation with she's pretty I'm just complimenting her and trying to be as nice as I can, If I was happily married I wouldn't intentionally flirt, sometimes it just sounds like we are when we are just trying to be nice.

Not just men flirt. Women flirt just as much. Some partners like it when their loved one flirts as they trust each other and it gives them pleasure seeing their partner is attractive to others but in the end (s) he is loyal to his/her partner. Others just like it. I see nothing bad in flirting unless it turns into making out and sex. Personally I do not flirt if I am in a relationship as I am bad it and don't really enjoy it so much.

It depends. If he is doing a little mild flirting, that is one thing. But if he is doing serious flirting, that's another whole matter. There can be some fun banter and mild flirting with a girl, just for fun. But anything beyond that is out of bounds for a married person. And yes, if he/she is doing serious flirting, then they may mean it. So be careful just how much you allow to take place with a married person.

I'll admit to being a little defensive of my position, and I'll tell you why.
I used to think that being as straight-laced and vanilla as possible would be enough to attract the kind of enduring relationship I was after--but never met a woman that developed lasting affection if I didn't have an element of demand or scarcity about me.
I'm not sure why that is. I figured if I took care of myself, presented myself well, took every little consideration and focused on her interests that would be enough, but they'd inevitably bore of me and move on.
