Why does he like to chat with me but very rarely texts first?

He even one time fell asleep while texting with me. He puts effort into carrying our conversation. He’s texts are longish.

I think he doesn't want to seem needy, so he waits for you to message him first.
This also helps him out, because you signal him that you like him with messaging him first.

Yes, you should keep texting him whenever you want to chat with him.

You need to put effort into the conversation as well, i guess you already do, but you could send him mirror selfies for example, maybe that'll wake him up. Show him some clothes, ask him how you look in something. And just tell him what comes to your mind. Hopefully he'll ask you some questions or tell you some interesting story. Be cheerful.
If he still seems uninterested, try not texting him for like a week, and see if he'll message you.
He might not text you, but you can still text him again and talk with him.
He probably doesn't want to rush things, even if he likes you.

He also has mentioned that he’s prays (we’re muslims and he knows that practicing). Is he trying to impress me?

What do u mean by sticking around? He always replies when I text him first.

Yes, for example that. He texts you back, talks with you, pays attention to you. Doesn't just give you low effort replies.
And he tries to talk with you about various topics.
So, if he is still talking with you like 2 months from now, that would be a good indicator, that he is not just playing with you. But sadly, you never know what some people are capable of, or what they really want from you. So you have to just wait a see and try to not get too attached to him emotionally.
