Suppose I got thrown in jail for punching a dude for flirting with my girlfriend. What happens now?

Let's say a guy was repeatedly flirting with my girlfriend, after she and I told her to leave her alone. He says he wants to steal my girlfriend away from me. And I punch the dude in his face, thus hurting real bad. He filed police charges against me, and I go to jail for assault, despite the lawyer's attempt or my girlfriend's attempt to help me. Now that I'm locked up, I won't be able to see my girlfriend, which really sucks. Plus, this dude went right back to flirting with her. What happens?

I think it depends where you come that just punching bring you into jail. If the person you punched isn´t severely injured that probably wouldn´t bring you into jail in Germany. Just a punch would probably earn you a financial fee but no jail time as you haven´t come in contact with the law before.
