I don't know much about flirting because I never flirt. Never, I see that as cheap and something nonsensical even if the entire world glorifies it.

Anyways what you asked is a good question. Sometimes it can be really hard to understand what is friendly and what is flirting. I will tell you by logic what I know and what I have understood.

In my view, there are two ways you can come to know the difference.

1. Observe the language, the choice of words that are used. The smiley, emojis that are used. There are smileys which are specifically created for people who flirt. If you see any such flirty smiley, like wink etc then you will know what it is.

2. The intention, the motive behind the action. Being flirty is an action and being friendly is also an actions and intentions can only be seen by the choice of words a person uses and their actions combined together.

Flirting is almost always used with a motive, there will be a motive to generate interest in the opposite gender. Even those flirting people say they do for fun are also done with the motive of creating some interest, even if it is to make the opposite gender like them.

Being friendly on the other hand is completely clear of any motive, there are no motives, no reasons and nothing to be achieved by being that way. The person is friendly because that is how they are. They want to show that they are genuinely nice and that they care about you and want to help you when you need it.

A person being friendly will use proper language, crisp language. The sentences will not have any short forms and will be full sentences. Also a person being friendly will not use many smileys or may not use at all.

Flirting is done with the intention of testing a person's interest, generating interest in the opposite gender and hence it is done with the intention of testing and trying to push the limits and boundaries.

Being friendly on the other hand is always about being self aware and knowing their limits and respecting them.

Yes all this whatever I have said is not only in real life but even for texting also. It is valid and true as per my knowledge.

Guys tend to reluctant to openly flirt unless certain that you are single and interested.

The easiest way to check if he is into you is to ask him for help with something, if he says yes more than once, he is most likely interested.
