Hey, ladies, how long is too long for the male gaze?

No, i’m not asking about weiners, you pervs!
I’m referring to the dreaded “male gaze”. Ell oh ell! We all know the creeps stare, and the shy guys barely make eye contact. So let’s break it down. What’s long enough to get your attention but not so long it creeps you out? And maybe most importantly, how do you let fellas know their gaze is welcomed in that instant?

No more than 5 or 10 seconds, but usually I don't mind... in public anyone can look at anyone, if I welcome it I'll smile at him.

Many times people are not looking directly at someone they are looking past them and it can be hard to tell.

Count to 3 and if she looks at you, you'd better smile and adjust your gaze. 3 more seconds of staring and you've crossed over into "creepy stare" with a thirsty look.

I have been accused of this before. Typically if a am looking at any other woman uts a quick glance at her face. Looking at my wife it's a loving stare just drinking in her beauty. However because I have the typical 1000 yard stare that vets get, and if I am not wearing a vet t-shirt or hat. I tend to get accused of being a creep because I stare off in different directions not really looking at anyone but assessing everyone and everything around me. Which is still messed up. But its what I live with that and PTSD.

This happened to me earlier at a store. An odd dude spying on me from behind a shelf. I pretty much gave a middle finger and left lol.

But really though in general, 5+ seconds is creep level.

Are you staring just for a look, or with the intention on speaking with her? It makes a difference.

These are not separate things. The look is part of a process and somewhat without thought. The first glance is when you detect if she’ll get a second glance. The second one is the risky one because in a very short period of time you have to decide: 1) Is she attractive to me? 2) Is there something interesting or unusual about her? 3) Has she noticed me? and 4) Is she considering any or all of these same things about me if she has?
Even if you attempt several glances to come to any conclusions, unfortunately timed glances give the exact same impression as staring. Ell oh ell!

Anything much more than 3 seconds, especially if she doesn’t look back at you and smile, is a bit too long and can seem creepy. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Just a normal glance is fine but if I notice they're looking (and not just glancing) I get uncomfortable. I'm pretty anxious around guys.
