What flirting actually is? And how do I know someone is flirting with me? For example is sending shirtless pics flirting?

I don't think I can "define" flirting. But I know it when I see it. And I can tell you, for damn sure, that sending shirtless pics is definitely flirting. It's not even 'borderline' or 'questionable.' That is CLEARLY flirting. So... congratulations, you are being flirted with...(betcha can't define it either... even though you're actively engaged in flirting. 😋)

I just recently discovered a lot of guys would flirt with me and it goes over my head. 😐 In highschool guys would tease me in a playful way but I thought they were just being annoying. It turns out they were flirting. In public I'm put on the spot and some guy always playfully teases me. The thing is I hate being put on the spot. 😐 Guys have called me cute/beautiful and I respect that more than some guy playfully teasing me.

Flirting is a covert way of expressing your interest/attraction to another person. It's all about the subtext, innuendo, and double entendres. It may be innocent fun, not seeking a relationship or being physical together, but at the core, there is lust.

It simultaneously inviting yet releasing the recipient from any obligation. It's safe expression of feeling.

And, yes, as a practical matter, a shirtless pic is flirting but it is to flirting as standing on the edge of a pool with one foot and arm hanging over the pool. There's a lot less teasing or hinting -- the shirtless pic is bold and deliberate and shouts "look at the physical". It's like... a Toyota is a car and a Ferrari is a car. They're both cars but one's pretty extreme.

I don’t think you can define it in a definitive box for everyone as everyone has their own way of flirting. I think it’s a subtle thing though, It’s like letting someone you know you enjoy their time with you without saying it. I think people do it to leave that protective layer of unknown in place when they like someone so if that person doesn’t like them back it gives them the option of full deniability. Dancing around certain till they get conformation to avoid being hurt/misunderstood.

Well here's my opinion on this , if I really liked a girl I'm seeing then I would most definitely treat her to a lovely meal. by lovely meal I mean taking her out to eat at a restaurant or write her a love letter. Really if you want to flirt by texting or writing love letters then that's how you see flirting for me if I want to flirt with a girl that I like I would simply start a conversation with her.

I think it is deniable expression of sexual interest/intent. Deniable because it often happens in a social context perhaps even with a partner in the near vicinity.

For example a girl might refer to herself and put her hand to her cleavage. Clearly drawing attention to her breasts and inviting perusal of same. But there is still a deniability there.

I think of flirting as something that happens more face to face -- glances exchanged, some direct conversation..., it's hard to describe. Once I was at a dinner with my wife and another couple and the other woman seemed to be quite interested in capturing my attention. She invited me to join her pottery class, and when we mentioned we were considering moving to Seattle, she said "take me with you". It felt like almost like she thought she was on a date with me.

Personally I’ve never been great with this sort of thing. Im the girl who mistakes being nice as flirting (guess I’ve known too many assholes) but I would say sending photos that are shirtless, nude, or somewhat sexy or provocative is most likely flirting.
