The new guy is sneaking around. and there could even be some violence in this situation.

The new guy is in an abnormal position as well. Normally you would go on a few dates with a single girl and maybe you hit it off and maybe you don't. With a partnered girl there is something of an implicit deal that you will replace the ex partner.
